Street Corner Camels
This is the corner of aizirete lu 矮子热特路 and binhe lu 滨河路 in Kashgar, Xinjiang in 2007. It was taken on the Sunday morning market day. The Yengi Bazaar is across the street, and the village farmers and traders are coming in to sell their wares. At this time, the river side was un-developed, and there was little to no regulations on the farmers coming into town and setting up shop on the side of the road. In a few years, the sellers were no longer allowed to trade and randomly come into town.
Visiting in 2014, there was greater development* of the riverside walk, the Yengi Bazaar was still open, but there was no where near the bustle that once was.
I wonder now what the area looks like, whether the bazaar is still filled with Uyghur merchants or if it has been taken over by Han business owners, much like the Grand Bazaar in Urumqi had at the same period. Are the Uyghur elan (advertisements) still there? Would love to see pictures and hear of the market these days.
*By “development” I do not mean “progress” or “modernization”. I am only referring to the further construction and additions to the area.
